Remember the last time you were off to a foreign holiday with your immediate and extended family, your mom and aunts had packed instant meals, mathi, thepla, khakra and all that? Oh, with saunf flavored mango pickle of course.

Or do you remember how on your last holiday abroad, you had to stuff all the fresh fruits, bread and butter from the hotel buffet to keep you full for the better part of the day?

Just because some countries are heavy on meat dishes, we think we won’t find a decent vegetarian meal. Fret not! Here are some places serving hot, flavorful vegetarian meals for the plant lovers. Take a look.

1. Sri Lanka

You won’t be far from spicy, flavorful curries, vegetables and lentils when you are here.

2. Egypt

Dishes here extensively use lentils, eggplants and other vegetables. Here, a supposedly considered national dish, koshari, is the lovely concoction of macroni, lentils, rice topped with condiments and fried onions.

3. Mexico

Corn on the cob, nachos, enchilladas, quesadillas, tacos, beans, fresh veggies and of course, lot of fiery quotient! Very close to Indian spice palate.

4. Lebanon

Most of mediterranean cuisines use vegetables, nuts, lentils etc. pretty extensively and Lebanon is no exception. Binge on tabbouleh, hummus, baba ghanoush and so much more.

5. USA

Who would’ve thought of US ever making it to this list?! But growing awareness about vegetarianism and being vegan being the ‘in thing’, you wouldn’t mind all the options coming your way!

6. Turkey

Sure there will be sheesh kebabs and lamb, but there’d also be beautiful dips,  couscous, vegetables and fruits to choose from. You wont’t starve in Turkey!

7. UK

Again, because of the growing vegan revolution, even fast food chains are doling out vegetarian-friendly stuff. Be surprised to have a traditional pie with spinach and ricotta stuffing!

Motto for your next trip abroad? “Don’t starve. Give the packets of theplas a break. Explore. There is a scrumptious vegetarian curry waiting for you right around the corner!

From CA to advertising to writing, life has been a true roller-coaster ride. Not that I mind it. When not figuring out how to earn money to finance the travel, coffee and books, I am day-dreaming the travel, the coffee smell and virtually sniffing through new released books.
