The epic Taj Mahal forms a perfect backdrop for the spectacular procession, while the festivities make you time travel to experience the grandeur of Mughal era. Bejewelled elephants and camels that form the heart and soul of the rural dwellers enter the scene amidst the roaring drumbeats followed by artisans and craftsmen. This and much more is laid out, all to be devoured at the Taj Mahotsav, shortly to be held at Shilpgram from 18th – 27th February.

Despite being a major attraction for tourists from within and outside India, the craft and culture mela is one of the many underrated festivals. So, if you’re someone who wants to experience the true essence of India, then you must head to the promising festivities of this event. We assure that you won’t come back disappointed; rather you will have fond memories that will keep you warm inside for long.

1. Patronise world-class craftsmanship of Indian artisans

It is said that around 400 artisans from across India participate to showcase their original and awe-inspiring work. If you haven’t been to such a fair ever in your life then be prepared to be overwhelmed, especially in this day and age of mechanical reproduction where skilled craft goes unacknowledged.

You will get the firsthand experience of their world-class craftsmanship:

• Intricate wood carvings from Saharanpur (the principal centre for wood-carving in India)
• Kantha stitch and jute work from Bengal;
• Bamboo and cane artefacts from the North-East India
• Handmade carpets or kaleen and shawls from Kashmir
• Aplic work from Orissa
• Chikan-embroidery from skilled hands of kaarigars in Lucknow
• Exquisite Banarasi silk sarees that have designs heavily influenced by Mughal murals and architecture
• Reasonably-priced Khurja pottery that goes back to 600 years to papier-mâché work from Tamil Nadu. Phew!

You’re in for a visual and experiential treat, aren’t you?

2. Bag what you like

For those who want to pick souvenirs or do some mindful shopping, there’s no dearth of choice. Like we stated earlier, there’s crème de la crème of craftwork around you so the choice is yours. With artefacts, home decor items like furniture and linen to accessories and traditional clothes and other such shopping-worthy stuff sprawled around you, it is prudent to first take a stroll and visit stalls that serve your taste and interest. And, once you’ve finally decided on what to buy, don’t forget to haggle.

One warning – Don’t blame us if you find yourself stuck in a conundrum of choices – to buy something or everything!

3. Scrumptious cuisine from all over the country!

Taj Mahotsav is a paradise for every food lover; it promises the best of finger-licking, and mouth-watering delicacies from across the length and breadth of India, all brought together in one place. So, whether you’re an Indian or a foreign national, the strong aroma at every food stall is bound to seduce you. You can gorge on the diverse menu and taste the most delectable spectrum of cuisines.

Do not miss on the state specialities:
• Shaami and galoti kebabs from Lucknow
• Biryani from Telangana
• Fish fry from Bengal
• Assortment of rice dishes from Kerala
• Vada-paav from Mumbai
• Murg-bhaat from Jharkhand

4. Revive your culture - dance to the music and sing to the tunes!

For someone who loves attending folk and cultural performances, musical recitals, is a fan of poetry and some soul-stirring ghazals then this is definitely the place to be. To truly enjoy, we’d recommend that you can forego your inhibitions and shake your leg to upbeat as well as traditional dance forms like the sapera dance of Rajasthan, lavani of Maharashtra and get entertained by some nautanki shows. In the past, we’ve seen some of the most renowned artists grace the Mahotsav.

5. Shutterbugs’ haven to document experiences!

Take a deep breath, photography enthusiasts (and non-photographers too!). In fact, grab every opportunity of photo assignments to document the festive energy next month. Capture the vibes, colors, happy faces and merriment in your photos. An experience of this potpourri will paint the canvas of your memories with some of the best shots that you take!

6. Have a spring of a time!

After a harsh winter, take some time off and make merry at the Mahotsav in sun-soaked February. Take your family along with you and enjoy the cultural extravaganza. There’s plenty to keep everyone busy: kids can amuse themselves with camel rides and Ferris wheel and you can amuse yourself with enthralling performances by both popular artists and new talents.

7. It doesn’t cost much, really!

Since this initiative is by the UP state tourism in the bid to promote our cultural heritage, the entry ticket to the Mahotsav is bare minimum – INR 20. For kids below 13 years of age the entry is free. The only expenses you’ll have to bear are travel and accommodation, and of course the knick-knacks you plan to buy. For latter you will need your pockets full because like we said – you may want to buy everything your lay your eyes on.
