Known as the land adorned by the smile of the Buddha, Laos is simple yet surreal, soothing yet tantalizing.

1. Mystic temples

Any region’s culture and heritage are best depicted in the architecture of its spiritual places.

Each temple showcases a glimpse of the reign it was constructed in. Wat Phu for example bears a strong resemblance to the Angkor Wat of Cambodia, as it was built during the Khmer reign. The city of Luang Prabang has its own spiritual allure with its tranquil banks and peaceful monks. A glimpse into the Asoka dynasty is visible in the architecture of one of Laos’s most important structures, Pha That Luang in Vientiane, a Buddhist stupa.

2. Untouched wilderness

Surrounded by thick forests, Laos is majorly formed of rugged mountains and plains. This geographical structure is the reason that many parts of Laos are still untouched. The mystery of the unexplored brings adventurers from far and wide to Laos. Hiking, trekking, kayaking and most form of adventure sports available in Laos can be attributed to its natural topography.

3. Decadent meals

Nothing makes a happy traveller like fabulous local cuisine. And Laos goes all out to please the palate with meals made from fresh local ingredients. Neighbouring countries such as Thailand and Vietnam have largely influenced the cuisine of Laos. The once French colony stirs up some great meaty delights with a French twist. Feast on everything from yummy noodle soups to healthy papaya or meat salads and some fabulous French baguettes. Wash it all down with a pint of Beerlao – one of Asia’s best brews.

4. A Mighty river

The Mekong River is the life line of Laos. Originating in China, it runs through six countries before joining the ocean in Vietnam. Known as the “Mother of all Rivers”, it is widely used for transportation, farming and fishing. One can indulge in many an adventure along the banks of this river such as hiking and cycling. Or you can choose to simply cruise down the river in one the many fabulous cruise ships available. It is said the sunsets on the Mekong are like a magical light show, not to be missed.

5. Majestic waterfalls 

The twin waterfalls of Tad Fane fall down 100 meters to the gorge below. The mighty Mekong creates its own rapids and waterfalls along the way. The Khone Phapheng Falls is one such fall along the river located in a place called Si Phan Don which literally translates into four thousand islands. The viewpoint here provides a great view of the falls as well as of the islands. Dip into one of the many water pools of the Kuang Si Falls or hike up to the top to tone your legs!

Laos attracts hoards of backpackers and adventure junkies to its lands every year. So if you are looking to explore a lot but don’t want to spend more on your stay, Laos provides tons of hostels and guest houses starting at just 1$ a day.

7. Mysterious Phonsavan

Would it baffle you to see large jars, big enough to fit human beings, lying across a field? Imagine the theories that have evolved to explain such a strange display. This is exactly what you will see at Phonsavan. Made some 2000 years ago in a quarry 40 kms away from where they lie, these jars are still a mystery to many.

8. Exotic animal kingdom

The thick and untouched forests of Laos are an abode to some amazing creatures of this world. The 14 feet King Cobra is said to reside in one of the many forests here, as is the red panda. The tributaries of the Mekong are home to the Irrawaddy Dolphins which are found in abundance here.

9. Adrenaline fuelled adventure

If you are an adventure junkie, Laos will hit your soft spot. Experience the thrill of white water rafting in one of the many rapids on the River Mekong. Boat through a hidden cave at Tham Kong Lo cave or hike the “100 Waterfalls”. Indulge in the Gibbon experience and zip-line through the dense forests of Laos or sip your Beerlao whilst tubing through the Mekong.

The French left behind one of their signatures, the best coffee brew in the whole world. A French press in any of Laos’ cafes in the backdrop of a mystical sunsets is truly a magical experience.

11. To market, to market

The local artisans carve up a truly gorgeous display of garments, pots and other earthen curios showcasing true Laotian culture and tradition. Originating in the 14th century, weaving skills have been passed on generations and can be seen in the many shawls and scarves displayed in the markets. The night markets of Luang Prabang and the Vientiane bring all the sizzle and shine to shopping in Laos.

12. And in the end all that matters – simplicity 

You will experience true essence of Buddhism among the people of Laos. In spite of being torn by war for many decades, the local folk here seem extremely happy and cheerful. They believe in keeping life simple and minimalistic. As a tourist, you will find them to be extremely welcoming and heart warming. With about three quarters of the population indulging in farming, you hardly find people rushing to get through the daily hum drum.

Laos might give you a lifetime of memories but it keeps back a part of you which will always yearn to come back for the pure and simple delights of life.
