Watch a Kathakali Performance

If you are visiting Cochin, you must see what Kathakali, the vibrant, traditional folkdance of Kerala, is all about. The dance form is believed to have evolved sometime during the 8th century from a dance drama called Ramanattam. Kathakali, which is characterized by the colourful and psychedelic make-up of the performers, draws from the treasury of Indian folklore and mythology. Pop into one of the several Kathakali centres around town to get a glimpse into this amazing art form.

Cruise the Backwaters

What is a trip to Kerala if you have not gone for a boat ride on its famous backwaters. At Marine Drive, there are a number of boating services and experience the beauty of the Vembanadu lake up-close by going on one of these rides.

In India, this is an unusual form of fishing – where the nets are fixed installations on land – shore operated lift nets. A popular tourist attraction, their operation is quite fascinating to watch. You can even buy some of the catch, and just walk down the road and there will be quite a few enterprising street vendors who’ll cook you a delicious meal of it.
