Australia Tour & Travel Guide - Eating Out in Australia

Australia offers a range of interesting food, or ‘tucker’, as they call it. Native foods are mostly non-vegetarian, with kangaroo, emu and crocodile meat on offer. If that’s not your thing, try the Vegemite spreads and Tim-Tams. If you’d rather stick to known cuisines, there are a range of Chinese, Italian and Indian joints in the country as well.

Local Cuisine

For staple, modern Australian food in Brisbane, head to Watt, a friendly eatery and bar on the riverside. Cafe Sydney has great harbour views of the city, an outdoor terrace and Sunday jazz to go with your grills and seafood. Stokehouse in Melbourne is a quaint little beach-side affair, known for its seafood and service. At Perth, head to Fraser’s or Botanical Cafe for your fill of polenta and other local specialties. If in Canberra, head to First Floor for a fine dining Australian experience. For some authentic Bush Tucker, head to Ochre or Cherry Blossom in Cairns for emu rolls and crocodile wantons.

Italian Cuisine

Brunetti and the Italian Waiters Club at Melbourne are Italian restaurants par excellence. Knowledgeable waiters serve up great coffee, pastries and pastas in tastefully done interiors. For great pizzas and pastas in Sydney, head to the budget Bar Reggio or Hugo’s. For an upmarket Italian experience in Sydney, there’s Otto- a waterfront location frequented by A-listers. Santa Lucia and Capriani are great while in Canberra, serving up a range of homemade sausages, pizzas and more.

Chinese Cuisine

A Chinatown institution in Melbourne, the Flower Drum is one of the most popular restaurants here. Try the Old Kingdom for its duck dishes and Gingerboy for its fish. While in Brisbane, don’t miss out on spring rolls and karaoke at Ben’s Vietnamese and Chinese Restaurant. For staple rice, noodles and soups, head to Happy Days- a simple affair. Sydney has a range of Chinese joints to choose from- Marigold for its dumplings, Super Bowl for its noodle soup, and celebrity chef Kylie Kwong’s Billie Kwong, if you prefer a luxury experience.

European Cuisine

In Melbourne, head to Gill’s Diner for charming interiors and great European fare- fresh breads, meats and desserts. The European serves a mix of French, Spanish and Italian cuisine and specializes in breakfasts. If in Sydney, head to Una’s for your fill of home-style European cuisine. Perth offers great European fare at the sophisticated Balthazar and chic Rialto’s.
