Opening its gates today, to troops of excited school children, and equally eager older folks, the river-themed zoo, River Safari, is all set to become an absolute must-do for all who travel to Singapore. Even as it was unveiled, the wildlife park has found its way into the record books as it features the Amazon Flooded Forest, an exhibit that is the world’s largest freshwater aquarium.

Meant to illustrate the annual flooding of the Amazon rainforest during the rainy season, when fishes and other sea creatures swim between trees, the Amazon Flooded Forest is home to more than 18 species of animals including the endangered manatees. Besides the Amazon, River Safari lets the visitors explore seven other significant river systems of the world – the Mississippi, the Congo, the Nile, the Ganges, the Murray, the Mekong, and the Yangtze.

Yet, perhaps the most thrilling of the park experiences, a boat ride down a 483 metre-long river, dubbed the Amazon River Quest, is yet to be launched. The boat ride is designed to let the visitors experience what a journey down the Amazon would be like, complete with all the sights and sounds of the wilderness. As to when this ride will become accessible, Cham Tud Yinn, the Director of Exhibit Design and Development at Wildlife Reserves Singapore, which owns the River Safari, said “We do not want to give a confirmed date at this point… but we are confident it will happen this year.”
