Quantum of the Seas - The Smartship’s High-Tech Features go Awry in Southampton

The much awaited visit of the ship Quantum of the Seas ended up rather in disappointment for many on Friday, in Southampton. The ship anchored here to demonstrate its future-ready features owing to which it is known as the first smartship ever. This comes close to the launch of the sister ship which will be equally equipped – Anthem of the Seas. These high-tech features include robot bartenders, a world-class bag tagging system, and various apps which would supposedly make the onboard stay a luxury facilitated by technology. But all the demonstrations seemed to go astray when the absence of satellites for service provider O3b Networks in UK was realised. In the lack of the satellites, the widely talked about Internet speeds were never really achieved on the ship.

The patchy internet service affected the overall performance of the apps and services, exposing the teething problems at large. It was concluded that unless O3b is ready with the satellites in UK, the Southampton city terminal will not be able to enjoy the high speed internet on this ship. It is expected that next year when the ship, Anthem of the Seas arrives Southampton shores, the satellite would be in place to facilitate seamless execution of plans. Though the high-tech features on the ship was a no show, but the ship was able to impress its passengers and visitors with its lavish on-board dining options. The ship is on its way to New York, and as it enters the American territory, it is expected to reinstate the Internet bandwidth and make good for everything that went wrong lately.
