The Ship that will Never Sink

You have always wanted to go on that fancy cruise across the ocean. Watch the setting sun against the shimmering golden sheet of water. But you never had the money. Or you were the kind who got seasick the moment the ship began rocking on the water. But the sea never failed to fascinate you. So what if the liquid in your brain (actually, it’s in the ears) played spoilsport. Your prayers have been answered (no, we haven’t found a cure for motion sickness) but we have a cruise ship on which you can go without turning into a pauper, and without getting seasickness.

How the hell did it get there?!!

Bet you didn’t know there exists a cruise ship that actually sails on land. Okay it doesn’t sail. It hangs over a cliff overlooking a water body, like a ship washed ashore by a huge storm. This is the Sun Cruise Resort in Jeongdongjin, Korea. Yes, it’s a resort built like a ship.

VisitKorea has recently honoured it with the title “world’s first on-land cruise themed resort”. Came a wee bit late considering that the resort opened 11 years ago, in 2002. Eleven years and still going strong.

The ship-resort offers its guests a real sea experience. You can hear the sound of waves as they lash against the ship’s walls. The roaring sound is accompanied by occasional calls of sea birds. All you need to do is sit on the dock or in the lounge or even your room, look at the sea stretched before you, and listen to its sounds. What’s obviously rocking is that this boat doesn’t rock!

The cabins

What else has it got?

It has 211 guest rooms, two restaurants, a revolving sky-lounge (wooow!), a pool, and a golf range! Take care not to throw the ball into the sea. Or take care to throw it and hear the splash. Needless to say, there’s a bar too. What’s more, you can get married here too. A beach-cum-sea-cruise wedding sounds unique, eh? This is one ship that’ll never sink!

In pure luxury

About - Nishi Jain spent five years studying English literature at Delhi University, at the end of which she realized 'all art is useless'. Another two years editing novels and writing newspaper articles, and shouting herself hoarse in street plays, she realized that erudition never got anybody anywhere. So, she took off and visited the four corners of India, came back, and announced that the best thing in the world was cheesecake. Now, she just writes, plays ping pong, and eats cake on the sly.
