A six month salary package worth $100,000, including living costs. And what’s the job description you ask?! Experience the best of Australia and then rant about it online. Seriously!

It all started in 2009 when a whooping 35,000 applications were received for first The Best Job in the World campaign, which achieved worldwide publicity and was hailed as “the best idea since Willy Wonka decided to hide golden tickets in chocolate bars”. And that is the story of how Ben Southall, a 34 year old events organiser from Hampshire, in southern England, took over a luxury island villa for a six-month $150,000 job that saw him roam the Great Barrier Reef as an in-house online ambassador for Tourism Queensland.

Expanding on the same idea and bringing in more commercial partners, the new campaign has 6 Best Jobs on offer. “You don’t have to reinvent the wheel,” said Tourism Australia managing director Andrew McEvoy. “The Best Job in the World was one of the great tourism marketing ideas of all time. If anything our industry walks away from great ideas too soon; I’m pleased and proud to say we have taken something developed in Queensland and made it national.”

You could be the Chief Funster in New South Wales, an Outback Adventurer in the Northern Territory, a Park Ranger in Queensland, a Wildlife Caretaker in the South, Lifestyle Photographer in Melbourne or a Taste Master in Western Australia. Each of the jobs will showcase the best tourism attributes of each state and territory. Anyone can apply!

The campaign also targets 18 to 30-year-old travelers and showcase the benefits of Australia’s Working Holiday Maker program, which allows young people from 29 countries to have an extended holiday in Australia and supplement their funds with short-term employment. Tourism Australia will use the applications to create a data base of names of people interested in a working holiday.
