Exclusive to Meghalaya is a natural wonder, no found anywhere else in the world. Living root bridges deep in the rain forests of Meghalaya’s valleys are accessible via treks in many parts of the state. The biggest and best developed are in Cherrapunjee, and an absolute must visit when in this region. The trek is arduous, so its best to go well prepared and with time on hand. A long downhill descent through the thickly vegetated forests reveal magnificent views of mist covered mountains, roaring waterfalls and natural pools. Cross suspension bridges over rushing rivers until you finally emerge at the magnificent root bridges. The thick roots of rubber trees have been trained to grow in such a way that they form a bridge over the river, consequently connecting two villages on opposite hills. Ingenuity in its most natural form, these bridges are used every day by locals in these parts and have made life much easier for them. There is even a ‘Double-Decker Root Bridge’ here.
The areas around Cherrapunjee have many natural caves, inside which limestone deposits have led to the formation of stalactites and stalagmites. These magnificent structures are a sight to behold, giant shapes rising out of the rocky floor and the roof, glistening with water, and in every imaginable shape and size. The Mawsmai Caves near Cherrapunjee are well maintained by the government, well lit up on the inside, and many tourists frequent this natural wonder. A stream flows through the cave and forms a deep pool at one point, and there’s even a narrow bridge across this, all inside a cave! There are many other caves in Meghalaya as well, and caving in different levels of difficulty is possible in many of these. Krem Mawmluh and the Mawsynram Cave are two others in this region.
