Kenya Tour & Travel Guide - Things to do in Kenya

Go on safari

Need we say more? Get out those khakis and binoculars. Masai Mara, the most famous of game reserves attracts over three hundred thousand tourists every year who come to try and spot the Big Five - lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos and buffalos. There are several reliable tour operators and they will usually bundle the park fee, the accommodation, and the safari car and driver fees to make sure that you can enjoy your adventure without worrying about the details. Game drives are the backbone of most safaris, with the idea being to spend as many hours as possible in the bush searching for animals. A game drive can be done at any time of day, but early morning, mid-morning and late afternoon, with a break early on for breakfast, and another in the middle of the day for lunch, is the usual plan.

See Mount Kilimanjaro from Amboseli

Not as famous as the Mara, Amboseli attracts the second highest number of visitors in Kenya’s national parks. Not only is the game easier to see due to the sparser vegetation, Amboseli comes with a package deal that includes breathtaking vistas of Mount Kilimanjaro as well.

Scale Mount Kenya

One of the very few parks in Kenya that allows hiking, Mount Kenya lies in its own National Park. While the highest peaks can only be scaled by trained mountaineers, hiking trails are available upto Point Lenana, the smallest and most accessible of the three peaks. The landscape is dramatically different from the savannah with snow-covered peaks, glaciers, moorland and rainforest. If hiking is not your thing, game safaris are available and one of these can be taken to view the usual richness of wildlife that exists here.

Visit the Finch Hatton Safari Camp in Tsavo West

Fancy wearing a boiled shirt and tails on Safari? Need to soak in that Victorian bathtub with claw feet? Finch Hatton Safari Camp is the place for you. Named, of course, after Denys Finch Hatton, the camp tries to live up to the reputation he built as the impeccably dressed man in the wild. Luxury accommodation, vintage wines, five course meals and of course, dressing for dinner. Sorry, no bush shirts please.

Go diving and snorkelling in Malindi

Malindi lies at the centre of a strip of tropical beaches and Watamu nearby, hosts the Marine National Park. Visitors can also visit the surreal moonscapes of the Marafa Depression as well as the relatively less-visited Arabuko Sokoke Forests nearby. Walk through the Forest, explore the mangroves by boat, dive on the reef, try your hand at big game fishing or just relax on the beach.

Take a hot air balloon over the Masai Mara

A unique way to see the savannah, the hot air balloon ride is one of those once-in-a-lifetime experiences. Seeing the plains, the Rift and the far off Tanzanian horizon more than makes up for the unearthly hour that you need to wake to catch the sunrise. Known as Balloon Safaris, these need to be booked well in advance due to the limited number of seats.
