Mountaineers would love Bhutan for it has a number of beautiful treks – from short low altitude walks to arduous treks. The Samtengang Trek and Punakha Trek run through typical villages, temperate forests and rice paddy terraces. The Gasa Hot Spring Trek takes you to the highest district in the north where you can experience Bhutanese curative hot springs. The Jumolhari Trek, Laya Gasa Trek and Druk Path Trek going over 5000m are ideal for the adventurous and experienced.

Jigme Singye Wangchuck National Park

Located in the central part of the country, this is Bhutan\’\s second largest protected area. The park has varying altitude and rainfall, as the area covered ranges from high permanent ice peaks to low conifer and broadleaf forests. The musk deer and Himalayan black bear can be found here, along with the rare golden langur, the clouded leopard, the red panda and the Royal Bengal tiger. The park is also home to 391 bird species, and many varieties of fir and pine trees.

ThrumshingLa National Park

Bhutan\’\s newest National Park has both alpine and subtropical forests where broadleaf trees combine with towering mountains. Its elevation ranges from less than 1,000 m to more than 4,000 m, and temperatures vary from – 21°C to 28 °C. The park is home to snow leopards, tigers, red pandas and 341 species of birds. Rare plants, breathtaking scenery and diverse natural habitats have put ThrumshingLa National Park on the map.

Royal Manas National Park

This is the largest example of tropical and sub-tropical ecosystems in Bhutan. Situated in south central Bhutan, it borders with India’s Manas Tiger Reserve to the south and Jigme Singye Wangchuck National Park to the north. The Royal Bengal tiger, Asian elephant, greater one-horned rhinoceros, clouded leopard, Himalayan black bear, gangetic dolphin and pangolin can all be found here. Also found here is the rare golden langur, special to Bhutan. 365 species of birds have made this park their abode and these include the Rufous-necked hornbill, Pallas fishing eagle, great white-bellied heron, spotted wren-babbler, blue-headed rock thrush and emerald cuckoo. There are also more than 900 types of plants in this park.

Jigme Dorji National Park

The largest protected area in Bhutan covering an area of 4,349 sq.kmm, this is one of the most biologically rich areas in the Eastern Himalayan region, and encompasses warm broad-leaved forests as well as permanent ice fields and glaciers on Bhutan’s north-western border. Peaks such as Jomolhari, Tsherimgang and Jichu Drakey are prominent landmarks in the park. The snow leopard, tiger, black bears and red panda inhabit the forests and mountains of the park. This is one of the only places in the world where the habitats of the Royal Bengal tiger and snow leopard overlap. The alpine region is rich with flora and dont be surprised if you spot blue poppies, edelweiss, orchids or rhododendrons when you are here.

Bumdeling Wildlife Sanctuary

Located in north-western part of Bhutan and covering an area of 1,545 sq. km, this sanctuary shares international borders with the Tibet in the north and India in the north east. It home to around 100 species of mammals, including the snow leopard, Royal Bengal tiger and red panda. Black necked cranes are also found here in winter, along with 130 species of butterflies.

Sakteng Wildlife Sanctuary

Located in the easternmost part of the Kingdom, Sakteng Wildlife Sanctuary is one of Bhutan’s newer protected areas. It encompasses alpine meadows, temperate forests and warm broadleaf forests. The Sanctuary is home to people of isolated nomadic tribes and is characterized by thick carpets of rhododendrons. Snow leopards, red pandas, Himalayan black bear, barking deer, Himalayan red fox and the hoary-bellied Himalayan squirrel are found here. It is even said to be home of the mythical Yeti (or the “Abominable Snowman”). Bird species include the Assamese macaw, blood pheasant, grey backed shrike, grey headed woodpecker, common hoopoe, rufous vented tit and dark breasted rose finch.
