Versailles

Just a half hour’s train trip from Paris, Versailles is best known for the vast royal palace and gardens made by Louis XIV. The Versailles Chateau, in no exaggerated terms, is a must for all history lovers. Spread over an 18,000 metre square area , it is one of the largest history museums in the world. Walk through the corridors, The Hall of Mirrors, the King’s Grand Apartments, the Museum of the History of France and you will know why this monument is one of the finest examples of 18th-century French Art. If you are in Versailles and have the time, you can also visit the Grand Trianon Castle, the Temple of Love, the Place De La Concorde and the Chapelle Royale.

Fontainebleau

This pretty little town is a favourite weekend getaway for many Parisians. Lying to the city's south, the historical town is most famous for the Château de Fontainebleau as well as the large, fairytale-like forest of Fontainebleau. The magnificent castle's decorations have been lauded and are a fine example of French renaissance style, attracting hordes of tourists every week. The town is also popular for a horse race track, and its Sunday market.

Chartres

Chartres: An hour's ride away by train, the city of Chartres is most well known for its 12th century cathedral, widely considered by several art historians to be the finest surviving example from the High Gothic period. Just like the Versailles Palace, the Chartres Cathedral too is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Another significant historical site is the monument dedicated to Jean Moulin - one of the top leaders of the French resistance during World War 2. As you walk down the spotless streets, most houses are made of fine timber. There is a small river too, and you can sit by it and wonder how nice it would be if only all rivers were as clean and pretty.
