Washington Dc Tour & Travel Guide - Places to See in Washington Dc

With so many government buildings, museums, recreational centers and historical monuments in Washington, DC, there is a possibility of running short of time during a DC sight-seeing tour. Make sure you don’t miss-out on the ‘must-visit’ tourist spots mentioned below.

Old Ebbit Grill

Packed with political players as well as tourists, The Grill witnesses many intellectual talks inside the dining room. With brass and wood interior, this highly sophisticated place looks more like an institution.

Rock Creek Park

Double the size of New York’s central Park, Rock Creek Park is sprawled across an area of 1700 acres. Once you are in the park you will feel a sudden detachment form the bustling capital. This peaceful place stretches its boundaries to the Northern city confines.

Washington Monument

This 555ft tall monument is both, the tallest building in DC (Federal law states that no structure can mount above it), it is also World’s tallest sandstone structure. An elevator inside the monument will take you to the observation deck. It is recommended to make advance reservations to the monument. Large carry bags and food items are not allowed inside the monument premises.

National Building Museum

It is housed in the 1887 Old Pension Building. This four storied museum comprises of fully ornamented balconies that direct you to the 316ft-wide hall and 75 ft high Corinthian pillars that are one of the tallest in the world. The Great Hall shimmers in the natural light because of an inventive system of arcades and windows. Moreover this spectacular hall has also hosted over 15 inaugural balls including that of Barack Obama’s in the year 2009. One can also check out the concerts, family programs and exhibits like, ‘Washington: City & Life’ and ‘Tools & Art’ in the exhibition area.

Ellipse

An oval road encircling the huge park on the southern edge of the White House is popular as Ellipse. The park comprises of a group of monuments like, the Zero Milestone (that is an indicator for highway distances throughout the country) and the Second Division Memorial. Ellipse also hosts a variety of sporting events, rides, performances, festivals and parades.

Capitol

The bronze statue of freedom topped on a 285ft iron dome looks straight from the sky and all it screams is ‘That’s DC’.  Marbled Pillars, wide lawns and gardens add to the beauty of this renowned political center of the US government. You may also get great views of National Mall from the capitol.

White House

Once popular as the Presidential Palace, White House has evolved over the time.  The original building wasn’t white in color, it was restored and refurbished after being burnt down in the War of 1812. It was Teddy Roosevelt who officially sanctioned this mansion’s widely known name. Many believe that it’s a more somber site as compared to other DC sites.
