Prague Tour & Travel Guide - Places to See in Prague

Prague Castle

An ancient 9th century castle and an iconic landmark of Prague, the Prague Castle is a huge Gothic style structure. The St.Vitus Cathedral with its lookout tower is a major attraction within the castle. The Castle Picture Gallery, museums and the Royal Garden are some of the other attractions. It has many beautiful squares and courtyards, and also houses the St.George Basilica.

Charles Bridge

One of Prague’s most beautiful structures, this bridge connects Old Town and Lesser Town, and was built in the 14th century. It is a bustling place with street musicians, artists and performers. It is decorated with many Baroque style statues and runs over the Moldau River.

The Loreto

The Loreta or Loreto, as it is also known, is a Baroque pilgrimage sight designed as a replica of the Santa Casa (the sacred home of the Virgin Mary). It is a beautiful square with many buildings and an impressive Baroque Bell Tower. This 17th century structure is built around a courtyard and houses a church and many chapels.

Dancing House

A strikingly modern contrast to Prague’s historic attractions, the Dancing House is building designed by a Croatian-born Czech architect. Occupying a fine position by the Vltava River, this is a modern, glass building with a daring, curvy structure and bold outlines. The top floor of Dancing House is home to one of the city's leading restaurants offering magnificent views over the river and up to Prague Castle.

John Lennon Wall (Lesser Town)

An entire wall in Lesser Town is covered with Lennon inspired graffiti in the form of pictures, lyrics and slogans. Lennon was a hero to the youth during the totalitarian era, when communism prevailed, and many of his songs were banned during that period. This ode to Lennon was the Czech people’s way of rebelling against the government. The wall is preserved both as a memorial to John Lennon and his ideas for peace, and also a monument to free speech and the non-violent rebellion of Czech youth against the regime.

Petrínska rozhledna (Petrin Hill Observation Tower)

A smaller version of Paris's Eiffel Tower, the Petrin Observation Tower is a 60metre high structure situated atop Petrin Hill, overlooking all of Prague. A climb of 299 steps will take you to the top and reveal sweeping views of the city far below. It is also possible to see the highest peak in the Czech Republic, Snezka, on a clear day. It is lit up in red and blue colours at night.

Vysehrad

The 'Castle on the heights' is a beautiful place to visit. Built in 1085, this was the stronghold of Prague. It is accessible through the Vysehrad Park, a large, peaceful park with landscaped gardens and pleasant walks. The views from here are magnificent- of the historical buildings and the Vltava River. Other attractions include huge statues depicting figures of Czech Mythology and the Church of St. Peter & Paul.

Mucha Museum

This popular museum presents Alfons Mucha’s paintings, photos and ornamental panels. Mucha was known especially for representing artwork of Slavic maidens. A video documentary is also shown portraying Mucha’s success. This is definitely worth a visit as this man is known as one of Prague’s most respected artists.

National Museum

This is one of the biggest Museums in Prague and one of the main tourist attractions. It originated in 1818 in Prague, founded by Kašpar Maria Šternberg, and has around 14 million items varying from natural history, arts and music.

Strahov Monastery

Founded in 1140, the giant white Strahov Monastery looks down from its Petrin Hill vantage point over the busiest areas of the Lesser Town. This tranquil setting was established for the Premonstratensians, followers of the teachings of St. Augustine. Destroyed by fire in 1258, it was rebuilt in Gothic style, with later Baroque additions. its famous library houses one of the oldest monastic collections in the country, along with over 16000 books. The Basilica of Our Lady is also situated here.
