Penang Tour & Travel Guide - Places to See in Penang

Kek Lok Si Temple (Temple of Supreme Bliss)

Connect with Penang’s rich heritage at the Kek Lok Si Tempe, believed to be the largest Buddhist temple in South East Asia. Nestled on a hillside, the temple is home to the famed Ban Po Thar (the Ten Thousand Buddhas Tower). Interestingly, the temple is a fusion of various architectural styles, with visible Chinese, Thai, Khmer and Malay influences. A mini-funicular train takes you to the summit of the hill, where there is a towering bronze statue of the Goddess of Mercy. Perhaps the best time to visit this temple is during Chinese New Year, when it is adorned with thousands of glittering lanterns, to create a stunning atmosphere.

Penang Hill

Perch yourself on the top of the world...erm, the top of Penang. Penang Hill offers a stunning view of Georgetown, as the shimmering city and Straits unfold below at night. Catch the Penang Hill railway train to the summit—the ride is as fascinating at the view from top, because the train is a quaint wooden carriage. Enjoy a steaming cup of traditional Malay tea (Teh Tarik) at the top. Shutterbugs will love the infinite photo opportunities available.

Penang Durian Farm

Don’t wrinkle up your nose just yet. A visit to Penang’s durian farm (located close to Teluk Bahang Dam) promises to be an experience like no other. Take a closer look at South East Asia’s most famous fruit, and sample various delicacies at the durian buffet. Love it or hate it, there’s no ignoring the durian!

Fort Cornwallis

If you have a thing for history and stories from long ago, you will love Fort Cornwallis. The fort houses a small chapel, lighthouse and a bunker. Wander around, explore the narrow passages and stairways, examine the artifacts and check out the abandoned cannons lying about the Fort. Interestingly, one of these cannons is believed to have magical fertility powers by locals.

Toy Museum

Kid will love Penang’s Toy Museum, but as history goes, adults tend to love it as much if not more. Home to over 100,000 different toys from varied countries and eras, the Toy Museum will leave you spellbound!

Fireflies Show

“You would not believe your eyes, id ten million fireflies...Lit up the world.” Live the lyrics of this popular song at Sungai Kerian, on the river bank. Fireflies light up the mangrove trees that line the bank, creating a mystical yet spectacular aura.

Butterfly Farm

Nature lovers will have a field day at Penang’s butterfly farm, home to a large collection of butterflies, rare insects, lizards and reptiles. Pose with the dainty, colourful butterflies or just admire their beauty as they flutter by!

Tropical Spice Garden

If exotic flora is your calling, you will love Penang’s tropical Spice Garden. This spectacular garden is nestled in a valley, along the shore of Teluk Bahang. It’s the kind of place that makes you want to fall in love! Apart from its priceless location, another reason to visit: It is home to over 100 varieties of exotic spices, herbs and plants.

Penang Bird Park

Is that a bird? A plane? No silly, it’s just a flamingo taking flight at Penang’s gorgeous Bird Park! Stop by to spend a lazy afternoon with the eagles, ostriches, hornbills and macaws. And families will love a cosy picnic under the shady trees of the park.
