Nuwara Eliya Tourism & Travel Guide - Know Before you Go!

Nuwara Eliya Overview

It is evening and Sri Lanka’s tallest mountain, the Pidurutalagala, casts its serene shadow over the vast surroundings. Somewhere in its protection, lies a bustling town. Nestled in the central highlands of Sri Lanka, the town was founded by a Samuel Baker (who really must be an important man considering his resume insists that he is also the discoverer of Lake Albert and explorer of the Nile). Soon, British regiments started cozying to it and over the days, the town saw many a ‘white’ man chase foxes, hunt deer and elephant with the same attitude as they played golf, polo and cricket. With its temperate climate, so different and unusual from the rest of the country, small wonder that it earned the more popular nickname of ‘Little England’. The smell of tea engulfs the senses, and try envisioning yourself under an early morning sky, rows and rows of tea bushes surrounding you and reducing you to a mere point in the larger canvas. Welcome to Nuwara Eliya … the ‘city of light’, and also Sri Lanka’s tea capital.
