Situated in the foothills of the Karakoram, but still as high as 11,500 feet, Leh and its altitude takes some getting used to. The capital of the Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir, Leh is the most touristy part of it as well. The town has no dearth of little cafes and souvenir shops, but somewhere along the way you’ll spot ruined castles and monasteries high on the hillside, giving the city a kind of ancient, other-worldly feel.
