A part of the state of Jammu and Kashmir, this predominantly Buddhist district is far different from the other districts, both culturally and geographically. Leh is the capital of the Ladakh region, and the most touristy part of it as well. The town has no dearth of little cafes and souvenir shops, but somewhere along the way you’ll spot ruined castles and monasteries high on the hillside, giving the city a kind of ancient medieval feel. For long, Ladakh had been a secluded Himalayan kingdom. A proud host of the highest motorable road in the world - the Khardungla Pass – Ladakh has always primarily been a favourite for adventure lovers. But as more and more carriers connect it to other parts of the country, it has risen in popularity amongst the masses, and every year the number of visitors just keeps increasing. Be it the traditional Gompas (Buddhist meditation centres) standing proudly in every village, the colourful prayer flags fluttering in the wind, the adventure trekkers in their sporting gear, the brilliantly clear blue sky or even the funny captions on the Himank road signboards, Ladakh promises you an experience like none other.
