Lachung Tourism & Travel Guide - Know Before you Go!

Lachung Overview

For those who’re craving to get away from the maddening crowd, Lachung may just be the answer to their prayers. Situated at an altitude of 3,000 m, on either side of the Lachung Chu River, Lachung, which means ‘small mountain’, is about 125 km from Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim. Away from the hustle and bustle of city life, this little hamlet has it all with snow-capped mountains, gurgling waterfalls, lush green forests and a serpentine river. Lachung, which is home to Lepcha and Tibetan folk, is often known as the ‘most picturesque village of Sikkim’, a term specially coined by British explorer Joseph Dalton Hooker. This quiet little Tibetan village follows a form of local self-government called the Zumsa, and retains the traditional way of life, while at the same time, welcoming tourists with warmth. The best way to enjoy Lachung is to pack away all your gadgets and gizmos, stop looking at the time and surrender yourself completely to the languid, laid back days.

Local Language

Nepali is the most popular language here, just as all of Sikkim. Lepcha and Bhutia are also commonly spoken.
