The nearest airport from Shimla is the Jubbarhattii Airport situated at a distance of 28 km from Shimla. Kingfisher Airlines operate limited regular flights for Shimla from Chandigarh, Delhi, Dharamsala and Kullu. The distance from the airport to the city can be covered by easily available taxis in about an hour's time. As the airstrip is small, only small planes can land at this airport. The preferred airport is Chandigarh (120 Kms from Shimla) due to better air connectivity with other Indian cities like Delhi, Mumbai etc.
The nearest broad gauge head is at Kalka - a four-hour journey from Delhi. After that, take the mountain train from Kalka to Shimla. This railway track has recently been granted the status of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The view is stunning, with the line passing through an amazing 103 tunnels. The fastest way to get to Kalka is to catch the Shatabdi Express, which departs early morning from the New Delhi Railway Station, arriving at Kalka four hours later. You can also choose to get off at Chandigarh (en-route to Kalka), and catch a taxi from there.
The National highway No 22 from Ambala to Shimla is an excellent road, including the hill stretch with many food joints along the highway (7 hours from Delhi 368 Kms, 3 hours from Chandigarh 118 Kms). The journey from Chandigarh to Shimla by car is a cozy drive as the national highway is well maintained compared to other hill roads. The road to Shimla is a foodie's delight. Don' miss the food at Giani Ka Dhaba at Dharampur (50 Kms from Chandigarh), between Kalka and Shimla. Dharampur along the highway now has nearly 36 well-established dhabas, restaurants and fast food joints. There is 24 hours bus service from Chandigarh (travel time 4 hours, 118 Kms) and Delhi (travel time 9 hours, 368 Kms) and buses depart at short intervals of time. Ordinary, luxury as well as Volvo buses are available. The buses can be more convenient compared to train services and are generally on time.
