Shimla Tourism & Travel Guide - Eating Out in Shimla

Shimla Tour & Travel Guide - Eating Out in Shimla

Most of the restaurants in Shimla are comfortable and offer good multi-cuisine food. However, if you are looking for local cuisine, the options are surprisingly limited. Himachal is known as the fruit-bowl of India. It has a thriving food processing industry that churns out fruit-based drinks, squashes and concentrates. The most famous flavors are plum, litchi, strawberry, mango and guava. For alcoholic drinks, try the locally brewed wines such as apricot, plum and apple and ginger cider.

The Devicos

Serves good Indian food of every description complemented by some Chinese and Continental dishes, one of the very few restaurants in town with food appealing both to Indian and to Western palates, with a good ambience as well. It is famous for its South Indian vegetarian food as well. Its twin Bar, located two storeys directly above (one storey above street level), is a hangout popular with the locals but not a match for the restaurant as far as decor and atmosphere are concerned.

Baljees

Among the town's oldest eateries, Baljees offers delicious Western and Indian food.

The Oberoi Cecil Restaurant

Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner with a good selection of European and Asian dishes. It is unarguably one of the finest places to eat in town.

Silver Oak

Serves Mughlai and Chinese cuisine. The food is great and ambience comfortable.

Ashiana & Goofa

Open for lunch and dinner, the twin-restaurants run by Himachal Tourism are famous for local Himachali cuisine. The location within a circular elevated glass building is quite an attraction.

The Lobby Lounge

This soaring 5-story atrium of the Oberoi Cecil is a great place to enjoy a quiet drink in an elegant atmosphere. A roaring fire in the winters adds to the colonial charm.

Rendevous

Located less than a minute walk from Christ Church on The Mall, across from "Alfa Restaurant", this restaurant/bar offers a nice cozy interior and strong drinks.

Indian Coffee House

If you are looking for authentic South Indian coffee, head to Indian Coffee House (ICH). It is a favourite with the locals. Although not as trendy and costly as Barista or Cafe, ICH retains the charm of the previous era.
