Kenya Tour & Travel Guide - Eating Out in Kenya

Ok folks, time to introduce Nyama Choma. Note: vegetarians, please skip this. As integral to Africa, as chicken tikka is to the Brits, Nyama Choma literally translates to roasted meat and is the Kenyan version of the South African braai or American barbecued beef. It is immensely popular - Nyama Choma restaurants dot the Kenyan landscape and Nairobi possesses some landmark ones. Meat is usually eaten with ugali, a dish of maize that serves as bread and sukuma wiki, a local variant of saag. Indian cuisine has influenced Kenyan fare and there are several Indian restaurants especially in Mombasa. Chappatis are very common as are samosas (vegans, don’t start rejoicing – the stuffing is usually meat) and githeri, a local version of mutton curry.

Carnivore, Nairobi

The menu is wild, dudes! In more ways than one. True to its name, the vegetarians as well as the faint of heart are advised to give this a wide berth but if you’re a meat lover, look no further. From filet mignon to zebra steak, the menu reads like a list of Africa’s wildlife population and you can sample any of the meats before making your choice. Believe it or not, ostrich is wildly (sorry!) popular

Blue Room, Mombasa

Very popular for unknown reasons, Blue Room is basically a fast food joint with sandwiches, burgers, pizzas and ice-cream shakes. Indian snacks such as samosas and pakodas are also available.

Nyama Choma Place, Nairobi

Hmm, need we say more? No prizes for guessing what this one has on the menu. Very popular with Kenyans, Nyama Choma boasts a butchery from where you can select the cuts you want roasted.

Angithi

Yup, standard desi food for the home-sick Indian. Average food but at value for money prices. A standard set of North Indian Mughlai cuisine is available here for those who can’t do without their dal and tandoori chicken.
