Bhutanese food is rich in chilli, and a staple meal consists of rice, vegetables and meat. Kewa-datsi. A potato, cheese and chili dish is quite common here, as is Shamu-datsi, a mushroom, cheese and chilli dish. Dartsi (cow's milk cheese) and Ema dartsi (red chillies cooked in melted cheese) are some of the most popular items in Bhutan.

Thimpu

Most of the hotels in Thimphu have restaurants serving local cuisine and some serve international cuisine as well. Swiss Bakery serves fast-food and continental fare. Seasons Restaurant specializes in Italian cuisine. Plums Cafe has an extensive menu of Bhutanese, Chinese and continental. Art Cafe is a cozy, fun place to hang out with great coffee and cakes.

Jakar

Hotels in Jakar offer local and international cuisine. Pizza and spaghetti are available at Himalayan Pizza. Tashi Restaurant and Deki Hotel are good for local cuisine.

Paro

Paro has a range of restaurants as well serving a mix of cuisines. Chharo serves Indian, Chinese and Bhutanese. Jachung Milk Bakery serves bread and pastries. Traveller’s restaurant is a popular place to visit.
