I wanna know what it means to be free
And I just want to know
What it is to let go…
I’m on up to the land above me
Dust in my hair and dust on my shoes

~ Dust on My Shoes by Tanita Tikaram

If your good-for-nothing ex cheated on or lied to you and left you heartbroken, pick up your bag, and set off to a land that will make your broken heart sing a delightful beat. The best way to move on is to travel. Instead of crying your nights away, ladies, leave your pasts behind, and start a new chapter of life by taking a trip somewhere.

Some people feel that taking a trip right after your breakup is being escapist. But truth is that travelling gives you the much needed physical and mental distance from your ex, and allows you to look at things from a fresh perspective. It may, in fact, make you a better, stronger person, though that is a highly subjective possibility.

Travelling can not only heal your broken heart, but can also help you in getting to know yourself better. Depending on the kind of emotional state you are in, below are listed some of the places you could go to heal your heart:

Get Some Action

Get Some Action If you have a lot of anger bottled up inside you, activities that get your adrenaline rushing and release all the resentment is what you need. Whitewater rafting, mountain biking, inflatable kayaking and bungee-jumping –the thrill these will give you will even surpass the rush of falling in love. An extreme underwater adventure might also interest you.

Best desi destinations:

  1. Rishikesh for river rafting
  2. Himachal - The annual half marathon at Shimla will happen on 29 September.
  3. Bir-Billing in Kangra is also gearing up for the 2013 International Paragliding Championship.
  4. Kerala (water sports)

Best international destinations:

Skydiving Adventure

  1. Scuba diving and surfing at the Great Barrier Reef in Australia
  2. Trekking in Nepal
  3. Snorkelling in Maldives
  4. Skiing in Switzerland
  5. Skydiving

Have a Fling, Party Hard

As they say, “The best way to get over a man is to get under one.” But make sure that you are only looking for a guy to have a quick fling with or maybe a one-night stand, and nothing serious. As far as its short term, it’s cool. You don’t want another boyfriend, right when you are trying to forget your last one! Also the best thing about going someplace far is that no one needs to find out about it. After all what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas! (In our case it will be Go Goa Gone :P )

The Kamalame Cay in Bahamas offers a Le Divorce package. Fill out your ‘vice and virtue’ form carefully, and look forward to exciting surprises.

Best desi destination: Goa. Fun guaranteed with sun, sand and sexy men in shorts!

Best International destination: Vegas is not the only place to let your hair down. There’s Bangkok, Pattaya in Thailand. Tashkent in Uzbekistan. Actually, the entire world can be your playground.

Wash The Man Out

So you still cannot come to thinking about being with another man. If you cannot shrug it away with a vodka or a fling, then getting pampered and indulging in some spa treatments is your best bet. Stress and fear can destroy you. So skip the being-sorry-for-yourself path, go ahead and book a week at a destination spa. You will get the much needed “me” time and everything from meals to massages are meant to rejuvenate your mind, body and soul.

Best desi destination: Kerala.

Best international spa destinations: Budapest, Hawaii, Maldives, Istanbul, Phuket

Peace guaranteed, glowing skin guaranteed, getting lucky again guaranteed!

Help Someone Else

Now that you are single you have a lot of free time on hand. Instead of going over your breakup again and again just focus on something else. Travel by volunteering for a cause that interests you, be it teaching at a school in Africa or working with animals at a local NGO. Knowing about less fortunate people makes us thankful for all that we take for granted in our lives. Also it’s a great opportunity to make new friends, learn a new language, meet new people and get to know a new culture.

Your options:

  1. Southeast Asia. Go to Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar
  2. Teach English in Sudan.
  3. Work with United Nations

Road Trip

It’s not always necessary to travel to far-off places to get over a breakup; all you need is a change of surroundings and routines. You can make that happen close to your hometown too. Just pack some munchies and good music, and set off on a trip down the road.

If you fear you’d end up thinking about the breakup, then you could do this with your bunch of girlfriends.

Dos and don’ts:

Do not carry your ex along. Carry nothing that reminds you of him. Delete all your photos with him from your phone, laptop or tablet. Delete his number and every other detail from your phone. Leave all the excess baggage home.

Do not go to a place which reminds you of your ex. And just say no to any destinations where you went with him, no exceptions.

Do choose who you want to travel with. Do you want to travel solo/with a friend/ with a sibling/ with a bunch of friends – take time and decide with a clear mind.

So ladies get up, make a bucket list and leave your past behind. Take a trip to heal your heart, after all ‘Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara’!!! :D
