What is it about Bangkok? Actually what is it about the nightlife in Bangkok? Perhaps the euphemism in its very name! The country is Asia’s go-to destination for sex tourism, with tourists flocking in from across the globe to savor a slice of its wild, colourful nights that have something on offer for everyone. Bangkok has come a long way from its sleazy, ‘dingy back alley’ days to a contemporary city that celebrates its spirit with bright neon and spunky jazz.

The ultra cool bars, the live music scene, the trendy clubs, even great restaurants and then something more. The famed katoeys of Bangkok, you might know them by their more popular name, the “ladyboys”. Love them or hate them, ignore them you can’t. And unless you have a seasoned eye, you will never guess! Everyone has, at some point heard if not experienced the clichéd Bangkok story of the bloke who left with the pretty lady and woke up with a pretty boy. They are either born male with effeminate tendencies or they may be hermaphrodite. Some of them even go so far as to have surgery.

The word ‘katoey’ or ‘kathoey’ is not the Thai equivalent for the West’s ‘transsexual’; it suggests that the person identifies themselves as part of a third gender. Unlike Indian and Western cultures where such persons are ostracized, Thai culture is more accepting of them as a part of regular society. Yes, they are subjected to some amount of social stigma, but you will find that several popular Thai models, singers and film stars are katoeys. Bangkok nightlife is incomplete without them.

“The Ladyboys of Bangkok” is a show that has gained cult status in the world of adult shows. Originally started in the dingy lanes of Bangkok nightlife, the show is now one of the most popular, sought after acts in contemporary cabaret, gaining popularity across the globe. Of course it’s an adult’s only show. Perfect make-up, immaculate hair, over the top costumes, and a suggestive act in all its splendor. Irrespective of your sexual preference, don’t underestimate the ladyboys. They are here to stay!
