Mount Cook Overview

Known to the indigenous Maori people as Aoraki (Cloud Piercer), after an ancestral deity in their mythology, Mount Cook is the tallest peak in New Zealand at 3755 metres. Fenced in by the Southern Alps and the Two Thumb, it is situated in the spectacular 700 square kilometre Aoraki Mount Cook National Park. Soak up this awesome peak and the surrounding landscape with excellent short walks. On the trails, look for the thar, a goatlike creature and excellent climber; the chamois, smaller and of lighter build than the thar, and red deer. Summertime brings the large mountain buttercup (the Mount Cook lily), and mountain daisies, gentians and edelweiss.
