Karnataka Overview

The eighth largest Indian state, Karnataka, ranks fifth in the list of most popular tourism states in the country. There are numerous monuments in the state, out of which several are centrally protected. Karnataka boasts of various centres for tourism such as modern cities, hill ranges, sculptured temples, beaches and forests. The hill stations of the state are mostly unexplored and present you with pristine beauty of nature. Some of the most popular hill stations in the region are Agumbe, Kundremukh, Horanadu and Nandi Hills. A low rate of tourism has helped these spots remain free of commercialization. Karnataka boasts of a rich variety of fauna and flora, and the sites are ideal for scenic treks and bird-watching. There are five national parks and twenty-one wildlife sanctuaries in the state, including Rangantittu Bird Sanctuary, Pushpagiri Wildlife Sanctuary and Nagarhole National Park. The biggest group of Asian elephants is present in the state and it houses over 500 different avian species. There are plenty of waterfalls in the state, including the Jog Falls which ranks among the highest waterfalls in the state. Other well-known falls are Sathodi Falls, Shivaganga Falls, Irupu Falls, Sogal Falls and Magod Falls. Reputed caves in Karnataka include Kavala Caves and Yana Caves. Karnataka has become a popular location for eco-tourism. Providers of private safari tours have emerged in many spots along the Western Ghats in Karnataka. The growth of adventure tourism in the state has also been quite noticeable due to the presence of rocky regions, lakes, waterfalls and the Nilgiris.
