Made famous by the monastery that was founded in the 11th century and is one of the oldest monasteries in Ladakh, Alchi is a small village, situated on the banks of River Indus. The monastery is the only important point of interest here, but it deserves a whole day of exploring. The cluster of mud buildings, have walls that have been painted with some of the finest and oldest surviving Buddhist paintings in the world.
