Summer has just kicked in, and there’s no sign of mercy from the heat. Along with getting our coolers and air conditioners sorted, most of us are making plans for that summer vacation to cool us down. The northern states of India tend to provide us much needed relief from the scorching summer sun and Uttarakhand is one of many favourite choices. With many opting for the usuals - Nainital, Rishikesh, Mussoorie - it does get quite crowded and very touristy.

For those of you keen on escaping the usual hustle and bustle, look at heading to one of these fabulous yet tranquil places in UK.

1. Auli

At 2800m above sea level, Auli is India’s own version of the Swiss Alps. Cosy ski resorts are a must do if you are a snow junkie. Snow laden trees against the majestic white slopes of the Garwhal Himalayas, a sight that’s worth it. Around 268 kilometres away from the nearest Airport, the Jolly Grant, Auli is a bliss all the way from March to June where the temperature is apt at 15 degrees only. If you are looking to breathe into some cold, crisp mountain air, this is just the place to head to.

2. Binsar

Cold weather, check. Wild life, check. Awesome scenery, check, Offbeat destination, check.

Less than 100 kilometers away from Nanital lies the sleepy hamlet of Binsar. Surrounded by a wild life sanctuary, this somber little town in the Himalayas is a perfect gateway of sorts. The erstwhile summer capital of the Chand Kings hosts beautiful temples and palaces from a bygone era. With grand views of the majestic Kumaon Mountains, Binsar is a true summer spot.

3. Munsyuari

Uttarakhand seems to be catering to adventure enthusiasts whole heartedly given that this next spot serves as a base for some of the best treks to the Himalayas - Ralam Glacier and Nanda Devi Peak. With views of mountain peaks such as Panchchuli, Munsyuari will elevate your senses and make you appreciate the grandeur of nature. With healing powers, the hot springs of Madkot are a must visit.

4. Chakrata

The breathtaking landscape of this picturesque town amidst the lap of the Yamuna valley will instantly soothe the sore eyes of us city dwellers. You can fly upto Jolly Grant Airport and cab up the 113 kilometers to Chakrata. The nearest train station is Dehradun.

5.Sattal

As the name ‘Sattal’ suggests, seven lakes adorn this awesome town. Hidden between mighty pine forests, you will be awestruck by the sheer wilderness here. Just 22 kilometres from the famous hill station of Nainital, this beautiful little town provides you all the seclusion from herds of tourists and puts you in the midst of nature’s many delights.

6. Jeolikot

A short drive away from Pantnagar Airport lies this beautiful countryside nestled in the hills. A frequent abode of spiritual gurus and leaders such as Swami Vivekananda and Guru Aurobindo, this town will heal you with its tranquil surroundings and clean air. Get cosy as you spend your time living in English Cottages and sipping on the freshly brewed teas of the mountains. Gape at the Mighty Kumaon and meditate as the soft breeze carries your worries away.

7. Mori

Dive into a chapter of the Mahabharata with your visit to the mystical town of Mori. With descendants believed to be from the lineage of the Pandavas and Kauravas, you never know what surprises you might find hidden in this quaint little town. Given the mythological background, temples here adorn Duryodhna as their primary deity. Located on the banks of the Tons River, Mori also provides adventure activities like white water rafting.

8. Abbott Mount

The name itself tells you that this was founded by an Englishman, a Mr Harold Abbott. But here is the most awesome part; it has only 13 cottages spread across its beautiful landscapes. Yes, just 13! Truly a hidden gem we must say. Walk along the flat winding paths and immerse yourself in the divine nature. All in all, a perfect spot for your Honeymoon or a gateway with your significant other.

9. Dhanaulti

If you’re looking for a cosy hide out in the hills, Dhanaulti is your perfect spot. Sparsely populated, this hidden gem located in the mountains of Uttarakhand will be your destination for tranquillity. Nestled between forests of mighty Oak and Deodar trees, Dhanaulti serves as a base camp for many treks; all natural, no touristy marketplaces here.

10.Lansdowne

Turns out that most of the hill stations around Uttarakhand were discovered by ancient Kings or viceroys and lords of the East India Company. Given that the climate here resembles the one he had back home in Britain, Lord Lansdowne founded this place in 1887. The current home of the Indian Army regiment, Garwhal Riffles, Lansdowne is a must visit if you are looking to relax and rejuvenate.
